Test Your Hearing over the Phone, Free for Month of May

Scientists have developed a quick and accurate hearing screening for adults that can be taken over a telephone, and the test is free this month.

To take the test, call 1-866-223-7575 from a landline or Internet- based telephone (but not a cellphone) and follow the directions. The process takes about 10 minutes.

The National Hearing Test, which regularly costs $8, was developed by researchers with Communication Disorders Technology Inc.; Indiana University and VU Medical Center of Amsterdam. The test was created using a government grant and is a nonprofit enterprise.

Nearly half of adults over the age of 48 experience hearing loss, yet few seek help. But if caught early, steps can be taken to keep it from getting worse, experts say.

"Research shows that early intervention and hearing loss leads to a better quality of life and greater success with hearing aids," said Dr. Charles Watson, professor emeritus of speech and hearing sciences at Indiana University.

But too often, people may suspect they have hearing loss but are not convinced enough to hassle with making an appointment to get tested, Watson said. …
