Former Botanical Garden Head Peter Raven to Get Award from National Arboretum

WASHINGTON * Former Missouri Botanical Garden head Peter Raven will receive a Medal of Excellence from the National Arboretum on Tuesday at an invitation-only ceremony that will also include a discussion of his life's work.

The arboretum announced it is honoring Raven because of his efforts promoting "gardens and ornamental horticulture as a way to interest the public in conservation and supporting sustainable environments."

It's only the third time that the arboretum, a 446-acre research and education site in northeast Washington, has awarded the medal since it was initiated in 2002. The arboretum announced details of the ceremony on Friday, Raven's 78th birthday.

The first award was given posthumously 12 years ago to former first lady Lady Bird Johnson for her work beautifying the capital. The second was awarded in 2011 to Robert Bartlett, CEO for Bartlett Trees, for his work improving trees at Arlington National Cemetery and elsewhere.

Raven, who earlier this year told the Post-Dispatch he was recovering from a broken neck from a fall in January, will be interviewed by Sally J. …
