Sobotka Receives Narrow Win in Arbitration

Blues forward Vladimir Sobotka, who will play the 2014-15 season in Russia, received a one-year arbitration award Monday for $2,725,000.

The Blues' best offer on a one-year contract was $2.7 million, but Sobotka, who was requesting $3 million, rejected the proposal and negotiations broke down.

A restricted free agent, Sobotka signed a three-year, $12 million contract with Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League earlier this month. He has an out clause in that contract that allows him to return to the NHL after each season, but not until the end of 2014- 15.

"It represents a number that we believe was fair all along," Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said. "When Vladimir decides to come back to the NHL, we're excited to have him."

Sobotka's NHL contract, announced Monday, will carry over to the season in which Sobotka returns to the NHL. But by not accepting the Blues' original $2.7 million offer, he has delayed reaching unrestricted free agency for at least two seasons. …
