NFL Notebook: Browns to Name Starting QB on Tuesday

Article excerpt

Browns to name starter at quarterback Tuesday

Browns coach Mike Pettine has set Tuesday as his target date. That's when he'll say whether Brian Hoyer or rookie Johnny Manziel is the starting quarterback for the opener.

Pettine said Thursday that Hoyer will start against the Washington Redskins on Monday night, with Manziel getting snaps with the first-team offense. Pettine isn't sure how he'll divide their time and will see how the game unfolds. His focus is making sure the "reps are close to equal."

Hoyer started Cleveland's preseason opener at Detroit, with Manziel playing exclusively with the backups. Pettine says the Browns are fortunate to have two quarterbacks with "NFL starter ability."

Pettine would not confirm or deny a report Manziel was late to a team meeting this week. (AP)

Miller out for season * Chicago Bears tight end Zach Miller has been placed on season-ending injured reserve because of the foot injury he suffered in Thursday's 20-19 preseason victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Miller left the game early and never returned. He had six catches for 68 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason opener as he tried to make the team as a third tight end behind starter Martellus Bennett and backup Dante Rosario.

The Bears added former Redskins wide receiver Kofi Hughes to the roster to fill Miller's spot.

There was no update from coach Marc Trestman on the ankle injury suffered by rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller. (AP)

Jaguars' RT injured * The Jacksonville Jaguars are shuffling their offensive line and not for performance reasons.

Right tackle Austin Pasztor broke his hand in Thursday night's preseason loss at Chicago and will be sidelined at least a month. Pasztor said Friday he fractured the fourth metatarsal in his right hand.

"Right now, I think we'll re-evaluate in about a month or so and see where he's at," coach Gus Bradley said. "He's not out for the season."

Cam Bradfield will start in Pasztor's place next week when the Jaguars play at Detroit and probably will be in the lineup opening day at Philadelphia. (AP)

Jets rookie in accident * New York Jets rookie wide receiver Jalen Saunders was involved in a single-car accident early Friday and hospitalized. …
