ST. LOUIS SCHOOLS >District holds back students * Roughly 780 kindergarten through eighth-graders at St. Louis Public Schools are being held back this year because their reading skills are more than one grade level behind.

The retensions are triple the number held back in the district through eighth grade last year, according to state data.

City schools Superintendent Kelvin Adams updated the Special Administrative Board on the retensions at its monthly meeting last week. They are in response to a state audit in 2013 that found city schools had been promoting thousands of students to the next grade even though they had subpar reading skills. Doing so is in violation of state law.

Adams notified parents in March whose children were in danger of having to repeat a grade. Four hundred of them did not attend summer school. The other 382 who did still were not reading at grade level by summer school's conclusion.
