2 engineers hurt when train hits truck and overturns

Two train engineers were in serious condition Sunday after their freight train hit a transport truck in northeast Louisiana, derailing two engines and 16 tank and hopper cars and causing a brief evacuation.

The engineers' locomotive overturned and slammed into a tree, Mer Rouge Police Chief Mitch Stephens said. The locomotive ended with its main door facing the ground, he said.

Stephens said both engineers were airlifted to a hospital; he did not know which hospital or the engineers' names.

Stephens said about 50 houses within a half-mile of the wreck were evacuated for about two hours because of concern that a tank car of pressurized argon gas might explode.

The accident occurred Sunday afternoon about 120 miles east of Shreveport.

Stephens said trucker Daniel Shackleford, of Freedom, Mo., hauling a rig owned by Taylor Truck Line of Northfield, Minn., was unhurt. He jumped out after his truck got caught on the tracks.
