Sports Shorts: Walters Is New MU Safeties Coach

Article excerpt

Memphis cornerbacks coach Ryan Walters, 29, has joined Missouri's coaching staff and will coach safeties, replacing Alex Grinch, who left MU for the defensive coordinator position at Washington State.

At Memphis, Walters coached under new Missouri defensive coordinator Barry Odom. Odom rejoined Mizzou's staff in late December, replacing Dave Steckel, who accepted the head coaching job at Missouri State.

"I'm really pleased that we are able to attract someone of Ryan's caliber to join our team," Odom said in a prepared statement. "I've known him for a while now, and had the chance to work together last year and he made a big impression on me. He's a loyal and tireless worker who I see as a great technician and fundamentals coach. He was very sought after this past season, so we're excited to recruit him to Mizzou."

Odom first met Walters, a Los Angeles native, in 2010 when the Missouri staff visited Arizona's defensive staff in the offseason. Odom was MU's safeties coach at the time. Walters was a graduate assistant on Mike Stoops' Arizona staff.
