Sound Off: Warner Should Have Gone into Hall on First Ballot

Article excerpt

I was shocked and a bit saddened to find out last Saturday night that Kurt Warner made it to the final cut but did not make it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Warren Moon and Dan Fouts got in on the first ballot and neither quarterback ever played in a Super Bowl. Moon never even played in a championship game.

Meanwhile Warner played in three Super Bowls, with two teams, and holds the top three passing-yardage games in Super Bowl history. In two of those Super Bowls his teams lost in the final minute, one on the final play and one with his opponents driving the length of the field after Warner had thrown a touchdown pass to put his team ahead. A few other of Warner's accomplishments are the following:

Two regular season MVP's, a Super Bowl MVP, a 65.5 percent completion percentage (third in NFL history), a 93.7 passer rating (seventh in NFL history) and a 9-4 playoff record, and he holds numerous postseason records.

I was lucky enough to attend Warner's final home playoff game, in Arizona the year after he took the Cardinals to the Super Bowl.

The Cardinals played Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. On that day Warner was 29 of 33 passing for 379 yards, no interceptions, and five touchdown passes in a 51-45 Cardinals win. He definitely retired while he was at the top of his game.

I do think Warner eventually will get in the Hall of Fame, I was just surprised that he will have to wait after all that he has accomplished.

I don't understand how he can be added to a list that includes Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Chuck Noll and Don Shula when none of them ever were accused of or proven to have cheated.

Belichick has been caught and is suspected of more that hasn't been proven. …
