Mary Barton

St. Joseph's basketball

A 5-foot-4 senior guard, Barton closed out the Webster Winter Challenge with a huge game in the consolation final, burning the nets for 33 points, including eight 3-pointers, in a 56-53 win over MWAA rival Cor Jesu. Barton, who averages 15.6 points, followed with a 22-point game in a 68-55 win over Quincy Notre Dame. Last season, Barton hurt her wrist in the first game and was out most the season before returning in late February to lead the Angels to the final four. A team captain who specializes in long-range shooting, Barton has committed to Truman State.

Nick Czar

Highland wrestling

After missing his junior wrestling season due to a knee injury suffered during football, Czar returned to the mat with a vengeance. The senior heavyweight won 4-0 over Springfield's Alex Gelber, a fourth-place finisher at state last year, to win the Class 2A sectional title at Matoon on Saturday while improving to 37-0. Czar, a two-way linemen, has signed to play football at the U.S. Naval Academy.

A.J. Epenesa

Edwardsville basketball

A 6-foot-5 sophomore center, Epenesa scored a career-high 30 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead the Tigers to a 59-49 win over visiting De Smet. Epenesa, who entered the game averaging a team-high 13 points per contest, almost had that by the end of the first quarter. He scored 12 points, including a pair of 3-point plays and a pair of dunks. Epenesa led the way again in 51-33 win over Granite City, finishing with a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds. An all-tournament selection at Salem, Epenesa is a big- time football recruit as a defensive end.

Fort Zumwalt West diving

A senior, Green captured her fourth consecutive GAC diving title. She amassed 525.35 points to finish 11.35 points ahead of Howell North senior Dominique Meyer. Green scored very high on her voluntary dives, including reverses, backs and inwards, and she scored between 7. …
