CBC Punches Ticket to Challenge Cup Final; MID-STATES HOCKEY SEMIFINALS

Article excerpt

CHESTERFIELD * Jack Harrison's night got even better moments after he went into the CBC hockey team's locker room Saturday night.

It was then that Harrison was told he was the team's De La Salle winner for the game, an award given to the top Cadets player in the game who didn't take a penalty.

The honor was well-deserved. Harrison scored a goal, set up two others, and could have had a lot more if it weren't for the stellar play of Fort Zumwalt West goalie Wyatt Sloan.

More importantly, Harrison led CBC to a 4-0 win over the Jaguars in the Challenge Cup semifinals at the Hardee's IcePlex.

CBC (28-0) advanced to the championship game against St. Louis U. High (22-2-3) on March 2.

"It's pretty nice when you're playing on a good line, with the team also playing well," Harrison said. "(It's about) getting shots, testing the goalie early and banging a few home."

Harrison's short-handed goal at 6:34 of the first period held up to be the game-winner. Benjamin Jones started the play with a dump in that bounced right to Harrison, who buried in into a wide open net.

Bud Winter added to the CBC lead in the final minute of the first, scoring on a backhander to make it 2-0.

"Getting the lead is huge, because you're playing a good team that plays hard, you get them down early and it's tough for them to fight back," Harrison said. "We just kept going at it more and more and made it tough for them."

Sloan kept the Jaguars in the game with several big saves in the first. Sloan stopped Andrew Croghan with a glove save and he made a sliding stop against Harrison as CBC's forecheck created constant pressure.

Sloan stood tall despite being under constant duress in the second, stopping all 21 of the shots he faced.

Sloan robbed CBC's Clayton Dawe and Zach Fizer on point-blank opportunities. Later, Sloan stopped CBC's Van Kraemer and Harrison on shots from the slot. …
