Some hands seem terribly difficult when you first look at them, but a little thought can make them amazingly simple. South was alarmed to see that he only had seven top tricks, with the club finesse sure to lose on the bidding this despite a combined 28 high- card points.

A little logic put things in perspective. Declarer's combined 28 points meant that the opponents had a combined 12 points all but a stray jack, perhaps, in the East hand after his opening bid. This knowledge made the hand quite simple.
