SEMO picks ex-Mississippi State coach Ray

Former Mississippi State coach Rick Ray was named the Southeast Missouri State men's basketball coach Monday.

Ray was fired as the Bulldogs' coach on March 21 after going 37- 60 in three seasons.

Ray was an assistant at Clemson the two seasons before that. He was an assistant at Purdue from 2006-10. During that stretch, the Boilermakers reached the Sweet 16 twice and claimed the Big Ten tournament championship in 2009.

Ray agreed to a four-year contract at SEMO that will run through 2019. He will earn a base salary of $175,000 plus a $20,000 annuity. Ray is the 20th head coach and first African-American head coach in the 108-year history of the program.

Ellis returning to KU * Kansas forward Perry Ellis says he will return for his senior season.

Ellis revealed his plans at the team's awards banquet. He says: "There's still a lot left on the table."

The 6-foot-8 Ellis averaged 13.8 points and 6.9 rebounds last season. He started 34 games and surpassed 1,000 career points while helping the Jayhawks to their 11th straight Big 12 Conference title.

Ellis missed two games late in the season with a knee injury, but returned for the Big 12 Championship and the NCAA Tournament.

Kansas went 27-9 last season.

Ohio State extends Meyer's contract * Urban Meyer has received a contract extension through the 2020 season after a year in which he coached Ohio State to the national championship.

His previous contract ran through the 2017 season and would have paid him $4.9 million for 2015. The new terms and extension give Meyer a six-year deal. He will make $5.8 million in total compensation for 2015. His contract will average at least $6.5 million a year over the next six years.

He said in a statement Monday he is honored to "represent this great university."

Meyer has led Ohio State to a 38-3 record and is undefeated in Big Ten regular-season play at 24-0. The Buckeyes defeated Oregon last season to win the first College Football Playoff.
