Hardee's, the burger chain with the racy television ads, says it is considering moving its headquarters out of downtown St. Louis. Among the cities on its potential relocation list is Nashville, Tenn., a company spokeswoman said.

The company's 10-year lease at 100 North Broadway expires in 2017. Hardee's occupies the 11th and 12th floors of the 22-story building.

Kathleen Bush, spokeswoman for Hardee's parent company, CKE Restaurants Holdings, provided no details about a potential relocation but noted the expiration year of Hardee's lease and said in an email that "we are exploring office space options which include Nashville."

Hardee's has been based in St. Louis since 2001, when Andy Puzder, CKE's chief executive, moved the burger chain's headquarters from Rocky Mount, N.C.

Bush did not disclose Wednesday the number of workers at the Hardee's headquarters. The company said when it moved in 2001 that the headquarters had about 75 workers and could eventually have 150 employees.

Puzder, a lawyer from St. Louis, said then that the move provided better access to CKE's headquarters in California and increased the ability to recruit management talent. In St. Louis, Hardee's initially occupied two floors of what was then the Firstar building, now the US Bank tower.

St. Louis officials had been unaware that Hardee's might leave the city but will try to make sure it stays put, Maggie Crane, spokeswoman for Mayor Francis Slay, said Wednesday.

"Obviously, we'll work very hard to keep Hardee's," she said. "They've been a great corporate partner."

In March, Slay said his office and Downtown STL Inc. would organize committees to improve safety and boost economic development downtown.
