NFL Draft Preview: Lambo, Who Played in MLS, Hopes to Kick in NFL

Article excerpt

Not many athletes get a chance to play professionally in two sports, but Texas A&M kicker Josh Lambo is hoping for that opportunity in the coming weeks.

At the age of 17, Lambo was a first-round draft pick (No. 8 overall) by FC Dallas of Major League Soccer. This week, he's hoping to get drafted or at least signed as a rookie free agent by an NFL team.

"It would be a huge blessing, and be a very, very cool thing to put up on my rsum and potentially join a pretty elite list of players and great athletes," Lambo said.

Lambo, now 24, originally signed a three-year contract with FC Dallas, with options for a fourth and fifth year. Dallas picked up the fourth year, but not the fifth.

"A couple of other teams approached me with contract offers that just weren't right for the time," Lambo said.

The soccer goalie wanted to finish up his education.

"I thought kicking, potentially if I was good enough at it, was my way to get into a better university," Lambo said. "So I went and met with my kicking coach, Taylor Mehlhaff. He is a friend of my brother's. He kicked at Wisconsin and got drafted by the Saints in 2008."

Working with Mehlhaff, Lambo tweaked his soccer swing and adapted pretty quickly to kicking a football. He sent out a tape to a bunch of colleges, and people at Texas A&M liked what they saw.

He walked on in 2012, kicking a couple of extra points for the Aggies that season. He established himself in 2013, making eight of 10 field-goal tries, then made 13 of 15 in 2014. That's not a huge sample size, but 21 of 25 is 84 percent which works in the NFL.

Lambo made 110 of 111 extra-point attempts but never kicked off at Texas A&M.

"So that's the big asterisk next to my name," said Lambo, who was born in Lansing, Mich., but grew up in Chicago.

Even so, it has been an amazing transition to American football for Lambo.

"The only football experience I ever had was when I was 10, and I actually won the Punt, Pass and Kick national championship," he said. …
