FAA: Agency awards total of $9 million to airport for improvements

The Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport has secured more than $9 million in grants from the Federal Aviation Administration that will go toward a variety of improvements, including construction of a new air traffic control tower.

Plans for the new tower have been in the works since 2009, but federal budget cuts put the air traffic control project on hold.

Chief executive Fredrick "Rick" Piccolo told Sarasota-Manatee Airport Authority board members Monday at a monthly meeting that a recent trip to London for a speaking engagement might have helped move the FAA funding. The airport announced funding Thursday.

"We are pleased that the FAA acknowledges the value of the proposed partnership between SRQ and the Florida Department of Transportation and we look forward to completing a new tower, which will enhance the safety and efficiency of our airfield," Piccolo said.
