Arlington Park Welcomes Swimmers Back

Of all the swimmers who returned to Arlington Park this week, I must be the worst. My strokes were ragged and I veered back and forth in my lane. At the end of one backstroke lap, I managed to bonk my head on the side of the pool.

You know what, though? It felt great -- I mean, except for bonking my head. After seven months of repairs, the Arlington Park pool reopened last weekend. Swimmers who had scattered all over Sarasota began making their way back to the place they've loved for years, if not decades. Jackie Plessas, a Sarasota hairdresser, returned Monday morning for her usual 6 a.m. swim. She was all smiles after a 2,000-yard workout. We talked just after the sun came up, lighting the sky with pink clouds. "You learn to tell time by that, eventually," said Plessas. "And there's this plane that always takes off at 7:10."

'Back tomorrow'

Before and after my swim, I hung around the pool, eavesdropping on swimmers and lifeguards. They greeted one another like old friends. …
