Tournament Is for Doubles Bragging Rights

Article excerpt

Mixed doubles tennis has led to so many arguments that the division is commonly referred to as mixed troubles.

Well, there should be no argument over which area tennis club has the top mixed doubles team. Not after mixed doubles champions from eight of the area's top tennis clubs settle things next weekend in the 2014 Battle of the Club Champions Mixed Doubles event at the Meadows Country Club.

Teams from eight clubs will compete for the right to call themselves the best of the best. There will be teams from The Meadows, Laurel Oak Country Club, River Strand, Sarasota Bath & Racquet Club, Jacaranda Tennis Club, Longwood Athletic Club and Lakewood Ranch.

Play will begin Saturday at 10 a.m. The second round will be played Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and the finals will be held Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

The 2013 champions were a team from Laurel Oak -- Eric Pressman and Nancy Corona. Pressman will be back this weekend, teaming this time with Susie Marro. The 2012 champions -- Jay Engstrom and Linda Pelletier -- return to represent The Meadows.

The public is invited to attend at no charge and there will be a grill out throughout the event. For more information, call The Meadows at (941) 371-6000.

Tournament to benefit Loveland Center

There will be a one day doubles event held at the Jacaranda West Country Club Tennis Center on Nov. 22 to benefit the Loveland Center of Venice.

The 20th Annual Jacaranda Memorial Doubles tournament will feature men's, women's and mixed doubles in NTRP categories 6.0 through 9.0. Play will be an eight-game pro set, with a tiebreaker at 7-all.

Deadline to enter the event is Nov. 19 at 5 p.m. and entry fee is $30 per player.

There will be a player party on Nov. 21. The event will include a silent auction and raffle of donated prizes from local businesses.

Funds raised from the party and the tournament will benefit the students of Loveland Center.
