BOWLING: Terry Metzner rallies to win his first PBA50 Tour victory

SARASOTA

As Terry Metzner put it, the monkey finally jumped off his back.

The 55-year-old native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, secured his first career PBA50 tour victory, rallying to defeat Ron Mohr in three games on Friday to earn first place in the second annual Sarasota Open, held at Sarasota Lanes.

In the best-of-three final, Metzner lost to Mohr 232-199 in the first game, but took the next two, 211-191 and 203-199, to claim the winner's prize of $2,000.

Metzner, who lost in the first round of last year's Open, and Mohr needed to survive Friday morning's qualifying round of 16 to roll for the title.

The key juncture of the third and deciding game came when Mohr suffered an open seventh frame. Metzner rolled strikes in the sixth, seventh and eighth, before opening in the ninth.

The 59-year-old Mohr, an air traffic controller for 25 years who joined the tour in 2008 and has amassed 21 titles, struck in the eighth and ninth and on his first two balls in the 10th. …
