Sherpa: We're Not in Jeopardy of Being the Only Ones to Award a 'Meld'

Article excerpt

Two weeks ago, I wrote about a game we play in the newsroom using the last few minutes of "Jeopardy!" We call it "The Meld."

When it's time for Final Jeopardy, Alex Trebek announces a category and then goes to commercials. Before the show returns, you have to guess the correct response, without even seeing the specific question (or "answer").

If you're right, you get a meld. It has to be an exact match. No half-melds or quarter-melds.

Little did I know that we are not alone:

Dear Life Sherpa * Don't know how long you've been playing The Meld, but my husband and I have been playing it long before it had a name. Jean Premeld

Dear Jean * I hope you start calling it The Meld from this point forward. It's a lot catchier than "you know, that thing we do when we guess the question before they give the Final Jeopardy! answer."

Dear Life Sherpa * My wife and I have been doing this for a while.

The funny thing is that I told my mom, who is in her 90s and an avid "Jeopardy!" watcher, about this fun little game a few weeks ago. Shortly after, your column appears on the very subject and I'm left to wonder: How does the Sherpa know my mom? And why is she giving him column ideas? Pat Perplexed

Dear Pat * To the best of my knowledge, I don't know your mother. But I feel safe in saying that even without having had the pleasure of meeting her, she is a wonderful person who taught her children to appreciate classic game shows and quality newspaper writing. And please pass my email address to your mom, just in case she has other good column ideas.

Dear Life Sherpa * It turns out that I've played The Meld for years on my own, shouting out mostly ridiculous questions to the Final Jeopardy category. I was right exactly once. The category was the Emmys, and I said, "Who is Candice Bergen?"

Keep on taking the strong stances on the pressing issues of the day. …
