Store's Co-Owner Mourns Loss of Pets in Fire

LAWRENCE -- An owner of Pet World released a statement Tuesday on behalf of staff after a devastating fire Monday afternoon killed many of the pet store's animals.

Co-owner Sherry Emerson said in the statement the store will reopen "as soon as possible."

The fire broke out shortly after noon in the store's back room, Emerson said, adding the cause is still unknown.

"The most tragic losses were all of Tim's (co-owner) breeder snakes in the back who perished immediately as they were nearest to the heart of the fire," the statement said.

Emerson said the number of animal lives lost is still unknown, but the animals who perished died quickly from fumes and smoke and didn't burn, except for the breeder snakes that died in the actual fire in the back room.

The statement said many of the fish, reptiles and arachnids survived, but apart from some feeder rodents, gerbils and hamsters that were located in a separate structure, all other mammals and birds died. …
