Home Runs Can't Save Lutheran St. Charles

Article excerpt

O'FALLON, Mo. * Facing an opponent playing in its third successive state semifinal, the Lutheran St. Charles baseball team figured to have little room for error in its Class 3 contest against Fatima on Monday at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.

The upstart Cougars made more than their share of errors, mistakes that proved costly in a 9-4 loss.

"This feels great," Fatima senior designated hitter Austin Schubert said. "We wanted to get back to the championship game. We came here as a team. We had one goal and we're capitalizing on that."

Lutheran St. Charles (16-13) will face Warsaw (22-3) in the Class 3 third-place game at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Fatima (21-7), which won the Class 3 championship in 2013 and finished third last season, will play Scott City (21-12) for the title at 1:30 p.m.

After giving up three runs in the first two innings, Cougars starting pitcher John Hurayt got his team on the scoreboard. He ripped a two-strike pitch over the wall in right-center to trim the deficit to 3-2.

"We tried to fight back, we just couldn't do it," Hurayt said. "For that one inning, (it felt) good, but then they were right back at it. I obviously didn't have my best stuff."

The Comets scored five runs in fourth to break the game open.

Schubert, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI, provided a two-run hit and Lutheran allowed two more to score on wild pitches.

"There were just too many physical errors," Lutheran coach Dennis Lueck said. "Fatima has been here before and this is new to us. The great thing is that we get to try and end the season tomorrow with a win."

Lutheran didn't go down without a fight, however, as the Cougars used the long ball to get within striking distance.

Kory Carter slammed a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to make it 8-4.

"We've got guys that can hit," Lueck said. "Those were nice to see. We just have got to tone down the errors. We didn't deserve to win today."

Fatima extended its lead in the bottom of the sixth. Schubert singled in a run to push the lead to 9-4.

Hurayt suffered the loss. He allowed eight runs on four hits. He walked nine, struck out three and hit two batters.

Alex Dickneite earned the win. He gave up four runs on four hits and struck out six.
