Matt Clancy spent three years at St. John's learning that pitching is about more than simply throwing hard. And now, the former Old Tappan star could be using those lessons to make a living.

Clancy, a left-hander from Norwood, didn't get a lot of media attention before the 2015 MLB Draft. But he certainly impressed the Seattle Mariners, who chose him Wednesday in the 13th round (No. 395 overall).

"This is just awesome," said Clancy, who listened to the draft Wednesday. "I've been waiting for this since I first started playing. When they said my name, it was an unbelievable feeling."

Clancy's fastball touched 90 mph this spring, but he said the Mariners were most impressed with his command of his off-speed stuff. The Texas Rangers and San Diego Padres also had interest, calling him Tuesday night.

Clancy was a key part of a bullpen that helped St. John's win 41 games this season. He appeared in 32 games, posting a 1-1 record with one save with a 2.91 ERA.

He struck out 35 in 34 innings pitched, walking 14 and allowing 26 hits. He only allowed one home run and opponents hit .218 against him.

"I've learned more command," Clancy said. "If you make your pitches, it's not going to hurt you all that much."

REDS TAB PURRITANO: Woodcliff Lake native Joe Purritano, one of the best hitters to come out of North Jersey in recent years, was taken by the Cincinnati Reds in the 30th round (895th overall).

The Dartmouth junior and former Don Bosco star was a second team All-New England selection this season, hitting .277 with three home runs, 30 RBI, a .500 slugging percentage and an Ivy League-leading five triples in 42 games. In the final 16 games of the season, the left-handed hitting Purritano had 11 extra-base hits with 14 runs scored, 19 RBI and a .692 slugging percentage.
