Weekend Wraps Sunflower Music Festival, Prairie Lake Pickin' Party

The same instrument played this weekend at White Concert Hall to produce classical music will be used at Prairie Lake north of Holton to fiddle some bluegrass and old-time country tunes.

The Sunflower Music Festival wraps up its 29th edition with three more concerts of chamber music at Washburn University, while the Kansas Prairie Pickers Association presents its annual Prairie Lake Pickin' Party.

The world-class professional musicians of the Sunflower Music Festival will present two more free programs: a chamber ensemble concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday and the festival finale, a chamber orchestra performance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The chamber ensemble program will open with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Serenade No. 12 for Winds in C minor, played by Alex Klein, Brazil, oboe I; Margaret Marco, Lawrence, oboe II; Richard Beene, Los Angeles, bassoon I; Andrew Brady, New Orleans, bassoon II; Jonathan Gunn, Cincinnati, clarinet I; Jonathan Cohen, St. Paul, Minn., clarinet II; James Thatcher, Los Angeles, horn I; and Bryan Kennedy, Plymouth, Mich., horn II.

After an intermission, the concert will conclude with Cesar Franck's Piano Quintet in F minor, played by David Allen Wehr, Pittsburgh, piano; Charles Stegeman, Wexford, Pa., violin I; Rachel Stegemen, Wexford, Pa., violin II; Michael Isaac Strauss, Oberlin, Ohio, viola; and John Walz, Pasadena, Calif., cello.

The final chamber orchestra concert will feature guest conductor Andreas Cardenes, a Grammy-nominated violinist from Pittsburgh, not only leading the orchestra but soloing with it on Max Bruch's First Violin Concerto. The concert will open with Johann Sebastian Bach's Harpsichord Concerto No. 1 in D minor, featuring Topeka's own Nicholas Good on the harpsichord.
