OLDHAM manager Darren Kelly says any potential new signings must be as influential off the pitch as they will be on it.

Latics have had just one arrival so far under the Irishman's regime, bringing in former City winger Lee Croft last month.

But Kelly has a strong idea of what he wants from future arrivals at SportsDirect.com Park.

"I won't just be signing a player for the sake of it, they've got to be the right fit for this club," he said.

"They have to be strong characters in the dressing room because we need that experience in there as we have a lot of young players in the team.

"You need that experience to blend in as the younger lads need someone to look up to during difficult times. When the chips are down and you need players to roll their sleeves up then an experienced player can deliver for you in the crunch.

"A lot of clubs are making big-name signings at the moment and that would be easy for me to do but it could have a detrimental effect.

"We need the right personnel and I am confident that when the season gets underway we will have that in place. …
