Vincentian's First Four-Year Holy Family Grad Heads to China

The first four-year graduate of Vincentian Academy from the Holy Family Institute is off to the University of Connecticut soon, but not before spending the summer in his native China.

"The first thing I'll do in China is go to the basketball court," said Jiarui Gu. "I didn't play basketball for Vincentian, though. I wasn't at that level."

The 19-year-old, who goes by "Gu," made it through four years of high school at Vincentian, while assimilating into a new culture.

Originally from Hangzhou, Gu moved to Pittsburgh in 2011 to pursue American schooling. China's education system, more dependent on worksheets and retention, wasn't the right fit for him.

"Education is not only about receiving information. It's about learning knowledge and improving your mind," Gu said. "It's like making you a better person, not a recording machine."

He found what he was looking for at Vincentian, and was able to live at Holy Family through the institute's international college preparatory program. …
