The heavy rain and high heat that marred the first two days of the New Balance Outdoor Nationals at North Carolina A & T in Greensboro did not prevent some of the finest performances in North Jersey history this weekend.

Saturday, the Old Tappan quartet of Andrew Schumacher, Tom Rienas, Will Rienas and Marc Rienas broke a 40-year-old Bergen County record in the sprint medley and came within a few meters of a national championship, running 3:25.08 for second behind Milford Mills of Michigan. The previous Bergen County record was set by Paramus in 1975, running the metric equivalent of 3:26.5.

"We were lucky because the rain was coming down really hard before our race, but it stopped and the temperature dropped about 15 degrees before our race," said Will Rienas, who ran the 400-meter leg before handing off to older brother Marc, who ran a sizzling 1:50.77 800 anchor.

"When I took the baton, my plan was to trail the person in front," said Marc Rienas, who sat in the midst of a four-team pack when it reached the final bell. …
