Palisades Park Drops Plan to Add Classrooms

PALISADES PARK -- The Borough Council has abandoned plans to build a pair of classrooms at the public library to address a surge in school enrollment, citing the project's higher-than-anticipated cost.

But officials still plan to purchase a two-story house next door to the library on Second Street and demolish it for parking.

On Tuesday, the Borough Council authorized the purchase of the property through eminent domain. Borough Attorney John Schettino will negotiate a price for the property, which was appraised at $535,000.

The owner of the property, Sun Jin Kim, could not be reached this week.

Borough Administrator David Lorenzo and Mayor James Rotundo said parking is always at a "premium" in town, especially near the Broad Avenue business district. That is why they were interested in the property, which is only a few blocks away and adjacent to the library's parking.

Lorenzo said he estimated the site could accommodate about 10 vehicles.

"We need parking," Rotundo said. …
