Raking in Sales: Zoop Exports Garden Tools to Australia, New Zealand

OKLAHOMA CITY - When Andy Zupan started looking for retail outlets to sell his gardening tools, he didn't imagine they'd end up on shelves halfway around the world before his own neighborhood lawn store.

Zupan, a resident entrepreneur at Francis Tuttle Technology Center's Launch Pad FT, launched Zoop Corp. about two years ago to manufacture a line of rugged aluminum rakes with special features such as broom bristles and squeegees. His ergonomic designs came from about 20 years in the landscaping construction industry, Zupan said, and he wanted to use as much recyclable material as possible.

Those elements proved attractive to Bunnings Warehouse, Australia's biggest gardening retailer, and won him the contract for stores in New Zealand and Australia through an international buyer at the National Hardware Show conference in Las Vegas.

The initial order in the fall was for seven shipments, which he fulfilled this year for distribution to about 300 stores. Zupan said consumer feedback to his products has been strong and he's now working on new designs, colors and product placements. …
