Teaneck Council Called Too Slow

Article excerpt

TEANECK -- The backers of a tribute to Holocaust victims -- one of two memorials currently planned for the municipal green --say the Township Council is moving too slowly to settle on specifications for the space, leaving the project in limbo years after it was first proposed.

Steve Fox, co-chairman of the Teaneck Holocaust Commemoration Committee, said his group has been working on its memorial for about three years. At first, the group wanted it built in Andreas Park or Brett Park, but those plans fell through earlier this year, when the council suggested creating an area at the municipal complex where several groups could construct memorials, he said.

Fox said his committee agreed to the change -- despite reservations about the lack of parking there -- on certain conditions. The committee presented its plans in February to the council, asking for a 30-by-30-foot space with 12-foot-high walls for visitors to leave dedications to those who died in the Holocaust, he said.

"We see it as an important educational tool not just for the Jews in the community but for the entire community," Fox said.

But because the council has yet to present its specifications and requirements for the spaces, firm plans can't be formulated, putting the 2016 groundbreaking goal for the memorial in jeopardy, he said.

"The real issue is: When is something going to happen?" Fox said.

The township earlier this year paid its planners $2,500 to map out where the monuments could go on its municipal green and take stock of the memorials that are already there, said Councilman Jason Castle, a liaison to the township's monuments and memorials subcommittee. During the spring, the planners said there is space for four groups to build memorials, though currently only two are planned, he said.

The other memorial planned for the space would honor victims of the slave trade. …
