Musings at the mid-week:

- Sure is great that Western Civilization remained intact after all the concerns over All-Star voting.

- In the end, Kansas City nabbed four starting berths, one more than the Royals managed in the previous 27 years.

- Anyone who still detests that much representation for KC should remember the Royals are reigning AL champions.

- They also carried the best record in the league.

- If anything, the voting process worked out well.

- Disputes over starters will always arise. But early ballot stuffing by Royals fans eventually prompted fans across the nation to respond.

- That, folks, was good for baseball.

- Do not dare load the bases for Paulo Orlando. Never. Especially not in the ninth.

- Another my-how-times-have-changed moment happened Tuesday.

- We fielded a call at the office requesting the score from the game KU-SA played in the wee hours Tuesday at the World University Games.

- Pre-Internet, the phone would have been ringing off the hook.

- Now, most phones we use have no hooks, but can provide the score of any late game.

- Not sure how advanced things are in Chile. Strides must be made in basketball based on the rout by the Ja-yanks.

- Timing is everything. I turned on my TV to see the United States was already ahead 3-0 in the World Cup final.

- Although I missed the early onslaught, I did watch, in amazement, as Japan's goaltender was too far up the field and unable to defend an Annie-over.

- Inspiring win for the Americans. Patriotic response from U.S. sports fans.

- But please, refrain from overstating the effect of the World Cup triumph on soccer's popularity in the U.S.

- The next step would be for a transcendent player, or powerful team, to emerge from the U. …
