When I read Gov. Tom Wolf's comments about why he vetoed the proposal to privatize the state-owned liquor stores, I missed the most important point. The governor, like a benevolent father, is trying to protect us from the rapacious, greedy private companies that would allow us to buy whatever we want.

For some time, I have purchased a specific brand and type of wine. It seems that I have excellent taste, because this particular wine sells out at my local liquor store by the 10th of every month. When I suggested to the store manager that it might be smart to order more of this brand, I was told that only the Wizards of Harrisburg are allowed to allocate what each store receives.

He did offer to see if any other stores might have some of this wine in stock. He told me that another liquor store had 11 cases and I could visit that store. …
