Slay Proposes Compromise Setting City Minimum Wage at $11 per Hour by 2020

Article excerpt

ST. LOUIS * Mayor Francis Slay is proposing a compromise bill setting a city minimum wage of $11-an-hour by 2020.

Slay and Alderman Shane Cohn had originally proposed instituting a $15-an-hour minimum wage within the same time frame, but the bill was met with opposition and a series of delays.

"When I started this campaign, I promised that we would listen to all sides, we would do our homework, and we would come up with a proposal that was fair to workers without putting their jobs or our economy in jeopardy," Slay said. "We think this new proposal accomplishes that."

Cohn will introduce the compromise proposal on Friday as a floor substitute bill. A majority of aldermen must move to have debate on the subject.

"The proposal is based upon dozens of meetings with business owners and the people I represent as well as the public hearings we held," Cohn said. "We recognize an increase in the minimum wage as a way to build an economy that works for everyone."

It remains unclear if Slay and Cohn have enough votes to move the bill forward. …
