ADAM Yates finished an impressive seventh on the first mountain stage of the Tour de France as Britain's Chris Froome extended his lead in the yellow jersey.

The Bury rider was in contention for a stage win on Bastille Day until Team Sky's Froome accelerated away to open up an overall lead of two minutes 53 seconds over American Tejay van Garderen.

Yates, 22, finished ahead 46 seconds ahead of two-time winner Alberto Contador and more than two minutes ahead of defending champion Vincenzo Nibali.

It puts the Orica GreenEdge rider 29th in the field ahead of more gruelling stages in the Pyrenees and Alps.

"I was in a good position because we took it easy in the team time trial so I am probably a little bit fresher than some of the big GC (general classification) guys," said Yates.

"I was distanced when Contador was dropped and I just rode at my own pace. …
