Sometimes baseball players continue to get to play in their hometown as their careers progress. Think John Wehner locally or Pete Rose historically.

But in the case of infielder Adam Salandro, that relationship between team and town occurs in Monroeville.

And if he has his way, Salandro, a star for both Monroeville's American Legion team and Gateway High School in recent years, will continue it for one more season at CCAC-Boyce.

"It would be my last year," said Gateway's leading hitter and most valuable player of 2014. "Then I would like to transfer to Pitt."

College coaches aren't allowed to comment on potential recruits, and Salandro admits he hasn't had a formal conversation with Saints head coach Bill "Homer" Holmes on the matter.

But Holmes also says "I'm not in the business of turning people away. I'm trying to get to 20 players. I'd definitely be interested."

Considering what Salandro has done for both the Monroeville Legion team and the Gators program for the past four seasons, the people he's played for feel he would definitely help Boyce.

Salandro started for three seasons in the middle infield at Gateway and as a sophomore was part of the Gators' 2012 playoff team. A right-handed hitter, he batted better than .400 his senior year despite having little in the way of lineup protection as the Gators won only one game in 2014.

Still, Salandro was named to the WPIAL Class AAAA All-Section 3 team.

"He's both a great coach and kid," said Gateway coach Mark Wardzinsky, referring to Salandro's stint as an assistant coach mentoring seventh and eighth grade players this year. "He relates well with the kids and knows the game. He could show the kids what to do and had a very hands-on approach."

It was because of his coaching commitment to his alma mater's freshman team that Salandro didn't attempt to play baseball in his freshman year in college. …
