Coquina Beach Hosts Soccer Tournament | Major Beach Soccer Event Is Scheduled for July 25 and 26

BRADENTON -- It's been more than 20 years since Peter Mellor first took in beach soccer at Copacabana Beach in Brazil and thought the sport would be a good fit back in the United States.

Not only was it a captivating sight -- the rows of sandy beach fields and enthusiastic players -- but Mellor saw the game as the ultimate complement to the technical training most elite players were getting on grass fields. The former English soccer player, then a youth coach for the United States Soccer Federation, held his first beach soccer tournament on Clearwater Beach in 1991.

Major Beach Soccer came later, in 2010, when Mellor worked with the United Soccer Leagues to launch a Florida soccer series. The program has since grown to include tournaments hosted by affiliates in California and other states, in addition to hosting staple Florida competitions in Clearwater, Fort Lauderdale and Daytona.

Next weekend, Coquina Beach in Bradenton, one of five Florida host beaches this year, will host a Major Beach Soccer tournament for the first time. …
