Each year, the country's best baseball team's for each age group look for their invitation to compete in the Perfect Game National Championships in Emerson, Ga.

This year the showcase featured a handful of local talent from the 16U Ohio Glaciers team.

After jumping onto the scene as juniors in leading Knoch to a WPIAL and PIAA championship, pitchers Cole Shinsky and Alex Stobert have made the step into the national spotlight. But that is only half of the local crop of talent.

Joining Shinsky and Stobert on the Glaciers are North Allegheny's Alex Mesaros and Pine-Richland's Maxx Harpalani.

"They are newcomers," third-year Glaciers manager Jimmy Zerilla said. "We had a group that had been together for a while. It has been a plus for us. All these guys have been a major part of our team. We wouldn't be where we are without them."

After a 3-1 start in the Perfect Game Championship, the Glaciers finished pool play with a 4-3 record, losing a couple of tough one run games.

"We saw great pitchers every single game," Zerilla said. "Our kids learned a lot and it was a great experience for them."

The Glaciers had success entering the tournament with a 15-4 record, including a 6-1 mark in the Beast of the East tournament and a second-place finish in the Buckeye Classic.

Shinsky and Stobert got a late start to their summer season after their prolonged high school season ended with a PIAA gold medal in State College, Pa.

Any thoughts of a hangover were washed away when Shinsky delivered a no-hitter in his first start of the summer in the Great Black Swamp Classic in Toledo.

"That was an awesome feeling," Shinsky said. "I was doing my job. It went well the whole ball game. That was my first no-hitter of my career. To be honest, I feel like I throw a better game when I don't throw that great of a bullpen."

Stobert has been solid since the beginning of the high school season thanks to a strong work ethic with his coaching staff.

"I am very pleased with how we are playing," Stobert said. …
