Merger Is Paying Off

Knowing full well that his South Hills baseball team would not have enough players to fill a roster for this summer's Greater Pittsburgh Federation League, Ken Morgan decided to reach out to Ohio Valley manager Pat Reilly.

"This year, we were looking down in numbers, so a merger seemed to be everyone's best interest to keep a team in the league," Morgan said.

The two ballclubs combined and went forward with Ohio Valley as its namesake, and the decision proved to be a smart move.

Entering this week, Ohio Valley (13-9) along with St. Johns- Lefty's (10-6) both trailed league-front-runner Bellevue Angels (11- 5) by one game in the standings of the five-team, wooden-bat league, which also includes Steel City Black Sox and Mt. Lebanon.

"We definitely exceeded our expectations," Morgan said. "This merger couldn't have gone any better. We jelled together quickly and it was an easy, seamless transition. The guys from Ohio Valley accepted our guys and vice versa.

"When we're playing our brand of ball, we're the best in the league. I certainly think this season has gone tremendous and we hope to close it out on a high note."

Consisting of current and former college players, Ohio Valley plays its home games at CIT Meyer-Middleton in Crafton as well as at Moon Park in Moon Township.

"The merger has made a big difference," Reilly said. "We had seven guys from each team come together and then added six more players this season. We're playing together as a team and that's the main thing."

A 2008 graduate of South Fayette, Morgan went on to play collegiately as a catcher at Clarion. He began playing in the Federation League as a member of CIT before that program folded four years ago. He then went on to help start up South Hills. Morgan also completed his first season this past spring as South Fayette's varsity baseball coach. …
