Business Watch: Dog Day Care Renovates to Add Play Space

Article excerpt

The Dirty Dog, a dog day care and boarding service, has renovated its building and added another play yard.

Owner Amanda Biester said most renovations of the building, 4826 S.W. Topeka, are complete. They changed the arrangement of the rooms so the boarding dogs have a separate place to sleep and added another indoor play space and fenced-in outdoor space, she said. The grooming area still is under renovation.

Having more play spaces helps to keep the groups of dogs smaller and more evenly mixed, with no more than 15 dogs per group, Biester said. The dogs are sorted into groups based on their size, energy level and comfort with other dogs.

"We have two more play areas, so we can have more groups of dogs," she said. "It allows us to even out our energy, so we can prevent injuries."

New dogs get a daylong free assessment to determine whether they are a good fit, Biester said. That involves pairing them with a dog trained to help introduce them to new surroundings and other dogs, she said.

"It's kind of like the first day of kindergarten," she said.

Hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon and 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. The office is closed Sunday, but the dog handlers come in to let the boarding dogs out to play, Biester said. Cost for day care is $20 per day, though there are discounts for people who purchase multiple days in advance, she said.
