The July 19 article "Social Changes Making Adoption Process Tougher Across Pennsylvania" sheds light on the decreasing number of children who are being adopted in our county. The decline cited in adoptions of those children involved in child welfare is accurate. In Allegheny County, child welfare professionals make every effort to safely keep children in their homes or secure kinship placement. When that is not possible, however, the need to find appropriate foster or adoptive families is crucial.

We live in a community that cares deeply about our children, but we can do better. As an advisory body to the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, we know that there is a great need for foster and adoptive families, especially for older children and teens. These children have most often entered the foster care system because of maltreatment or neglect. …
