I often read Jennifer Graham's column for its insight and perspective on issues that interest me. However, her column on the lion kill in Zimbabwe ("Walter Palmer, Killer Dentist," July 30) was not up to her usual standards but too emotional in content, rather than factual.

I speak from experience regarding hunting, as a Safari Club member and one who has pursued the sport for some 65 years. Zimbabwe was a treasure trove of wildlife when I first went there in 1990, on my very first safari, and since has diminished to just a few locations that are fast degrading in wildlife content, which has nothing to do with regulated hunting.

Proper and ethical hunting protects and gives value to wildlife. In its absence, poaching and habitat destruction will prevail and take their toll. …
