Ambridge native Stanley Zubik worked from age 14 until his early 50s as a produce and dairy manager for area A&P supermarkets. After those stores closed, he went uncomplainingly to an assembly-line job for another decade with men young enough to be his grandsons.

He and his wife, Susan, built their lives around family and their Roman Catholic faith, then saw those commitments merge when their only son entered seminary.

They never offered advice on his career choice. "They only weighed in after I was ordained; they said they were thrilled," said their son, now-Bishop David Zubik of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

Stanley Zubik died early Wednesday morning at age 88 at Mercy Hospital. He had been in intensive care since suffering a heart attack two weeks ago.

Mr. Zubik had been residing at Little Sisters of the Poor Home in Pittsburgh since his son was named bishop here. He and Susan Zubik had previously moved from Ambridge to Green Bay, Wis., while their son was bishop there. …
