NEW YORK -- Lucas Duda and manager Terry Collins both believe the first baseman will not land on the disabled list, but Duda did not start for the fourth straight game Friday.

Duda said he has a lumbar strain and is feeling better after taking medication.

"It feels better. Took swings, ran a bit," Duda said before the series opener against the Pirates. "It's moving in the right direction."

Duda took batting practice Friday, and the expectation is he can be in the lineup tonight against right-hander Charlie Morton. If Duda's not available he may be held out until Tuesday against Baltimore since a lefty starts Sunday -- Jeff Locke -- and Monday is an off day.

With Duda out of the lineup, Wilmer Flores (1-for-4) started at shortstop to get more power into the offense. Michael Cuddyer (0- for-4) manned first base.

FOURTH GAME: David Wright (back) went 2-for-5 and played nine innings in his fourth rehab game Friday with Class A St. Lucie. Wright has tallied 12 plate appearances thus far, going 4-for-11 with a walk. …
