Fear-Mongers Haven't Learned the Overriding Lesson from Iraq

I read Fred Hiatt's entire article "Lessons From Iraq" (Aug. 11 Perspectives) and it is clear to me that he hasn't learned much.

I do not know why, but people of his ilk have a tendency to always believe their own assumptions and then act on them. Mr. Hiatt obviously assumed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and feared their use. Dick Cheney and the rest ginned up the intelligence to push the panic button and many succumbed to fear (remember the mushroom cloud!).

They tried to use the fear factor again in present-day Iraq - on the assumption that the Islamic State group was so powerful that it was going to take control of all of Iraq. Assumption incorrect, Mr. Hiatt. The only solution to Iraq involves the three groups, Sunni, Shia and Kurd, that live there. …
