Bechtel Camp Encourages Kids to Enter Stem Careers

Engineers and scientists are challenged to develop solutions. On Tuesday, 80 engineers and scientists will be at the Sarah Heinz House on the North Side, challenged to develop future engineers and scientists.

The gathering of employees from Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corp. is part of the firm's annual outreach on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), aimed at encouraging students' interest in technical fields.

More than 170 students, from kindergarten through 12th grade, will observe and participate in unique science experiments at 12 stations. The demonstrations will be conducted by employees from the Bettis Atomic Power Lab in West Mifflin and four other Bechtel locations around the country.

Participants will learn how air pressure can implode a soda can; how an egg can move through a small bottle; how a lava lamp works; and other hands-on lessons. …
