For Good Reason, Seniors Are Becoming Connected

Regarding Brian O'Neill's Aug. 13 column ("Those Who Are Unplugged Feel Deserted"): As an Oasis Connections (computer and technology) instructor at Castle Shannon Library and a person well into his retirement years, I cannot disagree with Brian's column but would like to offer some observations of my own.

Eleanor Zacour is indeed not alone. There are many seniors who are among the unplugged. But I've also had people well into their 80s taking my classes - intro to computers, email, Internet, Facebook, iPad, Skype and FaceTime and more. Why? Because they want to be connected - to their children, grandchildren, far-flung relatives and friends. They want to shop online, get merchandise discounts, look up information, pay bills (no postage) and access other online banking services and, yes, maybe even play games. …
