OBA Academy Helps Develop Lawyers as Leaders

Article excerpt

OKLAHOMA CITY - In September, 22 representatives from the state's legal community will meet at the Oklahoma Bar Center for two days of leadership training.

They are members of the fifth Oklahoma Bar Association Leadership Academy class. The program includes four sessions and a graduation program in April.

The academy requires a major time commitment for a working attorney, said Susan Damron Krug, director of educational programs for the OBA.

"They have to make a living and have court-time conflicts," Krug said. "But they know from the start what days and what is expected from them."

The academy's goal is to develop leaders by providing attorneys with training in the core principles of leadership and how to communicate, motivate and succeed in their legal careers and as community leaders.

"I thought this would be a great opportunity to become more involved in the OBA in general," said Cody Cooper, an attorney with Phillips Murrah in Oklahoma City and a member of the 2015-2016 class. "I also see it as a good opportunity for personal growth, to expand my own knowledge and experience, and gain valuable leadership knowledge and skills."

Topics for the two-day session on Sept. 23 and 24 include lawyers in leadership, presented by OBA President David Poarch of Norman.

"Being a lawyer is a calling that carries with it obligations that transcend the mere delivery of services," Poarch said. "The Oklahoma Bar Association's Leadership Academy prepares those who want to serve our profession, our bar and our state by providing them with tools to help them better communicate, motivate and succeed."

Other topics for the September session include leadership in organization, leadership styles, ethics and running for office as a lawyer.

The second session will be during the OBA annual meeting Nov. 4- 6 in Oklahoma City. It will include a panel discussion with alumni of the OBA Leadership Academy. …
