Teachers to Fill in for 11 Laid-Off Librarians in Paterson Schools

PATERSON -- Eleven librarians were among the school district employees who received layoff notices this year, and school officials say they are making adjustments to minimize the impact of those cuts.

Teachers will be assigned to work at the libraries in schools where those positions were eliminated, said district spokeswoman Terry Corallo. "Although there have been reductions made to our librarian staff, none of our elementary libraries will be closed," she said.

But several librarians who worked in the district this year said using teachers to fill in won't be effective.

"That's just a farce," said one librarian who asked that her name not be published. "The teachers aren't going to do research with the kids, or promote literacy, or order new books when they are needed.

"If they don't have a librarian, they might as well close the library," she said.

Corallo said the district is in the process of rehiring at least four of the terminated librarians. …
