The Wilkins planning commission is studying possible revisions to the township ordinance that regulates oil and gas drilling.

Township manager Rebecca Bradley said the current ordinance does not address hydraulic fracturing and horizontal gas drilling used to drill for Marcellus Shale natural gas.

"Our ordinance is a good base," but language needs to be added to it to address shale gas drilling, Ms. Bradley said last week.

Wilkins' ordinance has not been revised since 2009. It restricts drilling to the manufacturing zoning district, located along the eastern portion of the township near Monroeville as well as near Rodi Road.

In April, EQT Corp. sent letters to some Wilkins residents stating that it is looking into future gas development in the area.

Ms. Bradley said the discussion of drilling by the planning commission Aug. 19 "has nothing to do with EQT" at this time as no leases have been signed in Wilkins.

An EQT spokesman would not comment on whether any leases have been signed in Wilkins or nearby Churchill. …
