Shaler Area Will Replace Rogers Primary School

Shaler Area School District will demolish the damaged and closed Rogers Primary School on Scott Avenue and replace it with a new building.

School directors voted 7-2 on Aug. 19 to rebuild Rogers, which was damaged April 4 by a fire. Bill Couts, Suzanna Donahue, James Fisher, John Fries, Susan Hunt, April Kwiatkowski and Steve Romac voted yes. Tim Gapsky and Jeanne Petrovich voted no.

Students in grades K-3 and their teachers have been moved into a wing of Burchfield Primary School. They will continue that arrangement until their new school opens in two years.

When board members questioned moving students in the middle of a school year, Rogers principal Cynthia Foht said: "We moved them into Burchfield in two days last spring. I'm sure we could move them back just as quickly."

In June, the state Department of Education had approved renovation designs that called for the addition of a multipurpose room that would be a cafeteria and gymnasium.

Greer Hayden of HHSDR Architects and Engineers of Pittsburgh told board members a two-story building could be constructed on the same site farther back from Scott Avenue, which would add security, improve traffic flow and provide more parking. …
