Checking them out

It's probably not enough of a sample size to say that Texas Tech is headed in the wrong direction. After all, give Kliff Kingsbury more than just two years to see what he can do.

But get this: Since Kingsbury opened his head coaching career 7- 0 - a streak capped by a 37-27 win over WVU in Morgantown - the Red Raiders are 5-13. With the exception of a bowl upset of Arizona State to end 2013, the only other wins are against Central Arkansas, UTEP, Kansas and Iowa State by a total of just 27 points.

Yes, it's been ugly of late, including surrendering 82 points to TCU. But never count out Tech, because when the offense is clicking it can be hard to stop. The Red Raiders nearly ruined Baylor's season before losing 48-46 to wrap up an otherwise undistinguished 4- 8 season.

Much of this season will depend upon what Kingsbury can do with a couple of pretty good quarterbacks. Davis Webb returns as the starter and Patrick Mahomes filled in as a true freshman after Webb got hurt, and Mahomes was spectacular at times (16 touchdowns to just four interceptions). Webb was still recovering from surgery in the spring and Mahomes was playing baseball, so the starter won't be determined until next month.

Whoever it is will have a full stable of returning backs, including 1,100-yard rusher DeAndre Washington. The receivers are almost all back, losing just Bradley Marquez, and they will all work behind a line that has four starters back, including perhaps the league's best tackle in Le'Raven Clark.

Defense? Well, that's another issue. …
